for the first few weeks of
7th grade I sat in Mr Miller’s Algebra
class, next to my old buddy Joe,
staring at the chalkboard dizzy
by the formulas, the variables,
tickled by the very numbers
manically scrawled across the
chalkboard as this hefty sweater
freak danced across the room
showing us all the light.
he said many things, but the only thing I remember was this, which he often scribbled madly
on the blackboard followed by chanting as an anthem building up each voice of the classroom till the entire chorus could be heard:
Always Reduce!
Persephone
(for X)
in the spring she was radiant, warm as the
sun on my face and the smile it
manifested upon it. love was in the air
as we walked in our shared light.
in the summer she was hot, far too
hot to touch, the only word to be reduced
from the rapid boil: longing.
autumn brought the first chill but it was
the most wondrous of seasons, infatuated
as I was by the growing cold that
froze my gaze of her in time.
and with winter came the full circle, the
warmth of springtime coupled with the
wonder of autumn, her timeless dance
still brilliant outside of time.
making the summer cooler to the touch.
